The following downtown hotels have space available and very good rates (under $150.00 per night) for the entire week of the conference and the weekend after. If you have booked or are interested in booking a hotel that is not listed above, please let me, Andrew (andy@diablo.phys.northwestern.edu), know so that I can assist you with traveling to and from the conference:

  • The Howard Johnson Inn is located a few blocks from the shopping district of Michigan Ave and Northwestern University's downtown location. Travel to and from the conference from Northwestern University's downtown campus will be free if you tell us in advance. Reserve rooms here by calling 1.312.664.8100
  • The Red Roof Hotel is also located a few blocks from the shopping district of Michigan Ave and Northwestern University's downtown location. For information about travel to and from the conference see above. Reserve rooms here by calling 1.312.787.3580

In addition, any of the following websites can be used to find very good deals around Chicago:

Flying:
Chicago has O'Hare and Midway airports. We will be making a few trips out to O'Hare Saturday, June 11th and Sunday, June 12th to pick people up. If you are interested in being picked up or have any other questions about how to get to your hotel from the airport, please email Andrew at andy@diablo.phys.northwestern.edu with your flight and hotel information. For inexpensive airfare, it is worth checking various web sites Travelocity (my personal favorite for flights), Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline, Cheap Fares, Discount Airfare ) or contacting a travel agent.

Parking:
The most convenient parking lot is the central parking lot. This is the parking lot across the street from (just west of) the Technological Institute. A permit is required to park here, so information about obtaining one if needed will be forthcoming. Do not park in the following Northwestern lots: Student Health, University Police, Central Utility Plant, Tech Institute lots and drives (which are within 30 feet of Tech), and Foster Walker complex. Parking on Evanston's city streets is not recommended as the "parking vultures" (parking enforcement) will ticket you.

Weather and Time:
Average high is 80ºF (27ºC) and low is 60ºF (16ºC).  Rain at some point during the week is a likely possibility. Evanston and Chicago are in the central time zone of the United States. Currently and during the conference, this time zone is known as CDT which is 5 hrs behind GMT (CDT = GMT - 5).

Food:
Here is a great guide to Evanston area restaurants.
